The starter guide to checking your website metrics

Let’s talk website metrics! Do you check yours? Or do you hide from them? 🙈

Keep it simple. You don’t need to worry about every single number: just focus on a few. I’ve created a video to walk you through my process with bonus spreadsheet download so you can do your own! But first, let’s start with…

A breakdown of the categories in Google Analytics

Audience = who is looking at your website. Where are they based, what device they’re on, how long did they hang around, and loads more. ⁣

When you’re just getting started with your metrics, keep it simple. Look at the overview page and keep asking questions. Where did that spike in traffic come from? What is my audience like compared to last month, and last year? Looking at your metrics in terms of the bigger picture will help you get perspective! ⁣

Acquisition = how they got onto your website. Did they arrive from social media, or from organic search? Knowing where your traffic is coming from will give you an idea of what’s working and what’s not working.

Behaviour = what did they do once they arrived on your website? Are certain pages performing really well and getting loads of views while others get ignored?

Conversions = did those visits translate into sales or leads?

Dive right in!

I’ve recorded this short video to walk you through my process of updating my metrics spreadsheet. There’s no sound, and you can pause/rewind as you need.

This is the starter version of your website metrics – there’s a lot more advanced ways of collating this information but I wanted to start out with a simple check up which just focuses on a few website metrics.

Get the spreadsheet

I’ve also set up the spreadsheet for you to download. Just visit this link: Monthly website metrics spreadsheet. This is a Google sheets spreadsheet which is set to “Make a Copy” so that’s the first prompt you’ll see. Simply save it into your own Google Drive and then you’ll be able to edit it with your own information.
